Facing the Challenge of a Growing and Aging Population

The number of accountable care organizations (ACOs) in the U.S. reached 488 in July 2013, more than double the 221 reported in June 2012. As these organizations strive to find new ways to reduce costs and optimize outcomes, they face another growing challenge-the dramatic increase in the number of patients coming into the federal and state healthcare system. With 10,000 Baby Boomers turning 65 each day, 18 percent of the U.S. population will be over the age of 65 by 2030-an increase of five percent since 2010.Combined with the higher demand of care quality and growing healthcare costs, ACOs must be armed with effective business practices and strategic partnerships across the continuum of care to be successful.
